The twenty million dollar (and then some) mansions of Aspen are a far cry from the working class alpine town of Jindabyne. Silver slopestyle X Games medallist 2011 Russ Henshaw should know.
The Jindabyne local, whose home mountain is Thredbo, has had access this week to a host of sponsor parties where everything is laid on. The Aspen X Games is as much about money spinning as it is about the competition on the slopes.
For one week every year the big names (think Shaun White, Torah Bright, Bobby Brown and friends) descend upon the millionaire’s playground and work podium hard for their sponsor money. After taking out silver behind Sammy Carlson’s gold in the Ski Slopestyle today, Russ is officially now one of them. Check out video footage of his winning run.
Russ was tipped by twin tip creator, Mike Douglas, as the dark horse of the X Games and Mike knows a ‘thing or two’ about skiing but outside of the ski industry not many folk know Russ in Australia. He can walk down the street without being accosted. Overseas in countries where all snow sports are a big deal, it’s a different story.
But this small town boy with big air tricks has been making waves for a number of years already. He’s won the New Zealand Freeski Open, the Barcelona Snow Show Big Air, the Frostgun Invitational Big Air, the London Freeze Big Air, the JOI Big Air, the Newschool PickNick Big Air, Redbull Playstreetes Slopestyle, he’s podiumed at the Austrian Freeski Open Slopestyle and Big Air, the US Freesking Open Slopestyle. Just to name a few…
Russ has still got the Big Air to go at the X Games. Can he make it gold, gold, gold for Australia?
